BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox acquired outfielder Mark Kotsay from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for outfielder Luis Sumoza, the team announced Wednesday.The move comes one day after right fielder J.D. Drew was placed on the 15-day disabled with a lower back strain.Kotsay will wear No. 11 and is expected to join the Red Sox in New York. The club will make a corresponding roster move when he is added to the active roster.
Kotsay, 32, is batting .289 with six homers and 37 RBI in 81 games for the Braves this season. The left-handed hitter is batting .305 versus right-handed pitchers. He has started 80 games in center field and has not committed an error in 176 chances in 84 total contests.He is batting .320 in his last 35 games. Kotsay went 5-for-5 and became just the fifth Braves player since 1900 and the second player in the Atlanta era to hit for the cycle on Aug. 14 vs. the Cubs. His double in the seventh inning was also his 1,500th career hit as he became the first player since Curt Flood to have five hits in the same game in which he recorded his 1,500th hit.He was on the disabled list from May 30 to July 1 due to lower back problems. Kotsay batted .333 with one RBI in five games at Double-A Mississippi on rehab assignment during that DL stint.Acquired from Oakland on Jan. 14, Kotsay has a career major league average of .282 with 109 homers and 597 RBI in 1427 games with the Marlins (1997-2000), Padres (2001-03), A's (2004-07), and Braves. His career bests are 17 homers with the Padres in 2002, a .314 average with the A's in 2004, and 82 RBI with Oakland in 2005. He has 115 outfield assists in his major league career, fifth most among active players, and his 113 assists since 1998 are tied with Vladimir Guerrero for the most of any player.He was drafted by Florida in the first round of the 1996 amateur draft.Sumoza, 20, is hitting .301 with 11 homers and 38 RBI in 51 games at Single-A Lowell in 2008. He was in his fifth season with the Boston organization after being signed as a non-drafted free agent in July 2004.
